Movie Review: My Bloody Valentine 3-D

Full Exclusive Review at eMovieGuide.net

The horror genre is one of the most pitiful modern day genres of film. It lacks originality, creativity and most of all, actual shock factor. Sure, certain dramatic flicks are able to shock audiences with some of their themes such as sexual abuse and domestic violence, but every horror film should be able to shock the audience in some sort of way or else it just is not doing its job. Although some directors (Alejandro Aja) are attempting to revitalize the dead genre, they are not able to accomplish the feat with all of the remakes being released. Black Christmas, The Ring and Quarantine all attempted to succeed their predecessors but failed horrifically.

When a film is made and is able to produce a special sense of originality, why try to re-create that? With even more remakes being released quite soon (The Last House on the Left, Friday the 13th, The Uninvited) the horror genre appears to have no promising future.

The Plot

My Bloody Valentine 3-D is another one of the horror remakes but with new spins on it. It re-creates the old 80's style of storytelling and adds modern day 3-D technology. The film centers on a small peaceful town that is shaken to its core when a mentally unstable miner, Harry Warden (Richard John Walters), brutally murders twenty-two people with his pick axe. The heir of the mines, Tom Hanniger (Jensen Ackles), was almost succumbed to the same fate that the twenty-two others were. Fortunately he was rescued by the town's Sheriffs and given another chance at life. Ten years later, Tom returns back to the town to sell the mine. With the arrival of Tom, comes the arrival of a new killer in the small town that is twisted copy cat of Harry Warden. It is then up to Tom's old friend and the new town Sherriff, Axel Palmer (Kerr Smith) and his wife/Tom's old girl friend, Sarah Palmer (Jaime King) to find out who the new killer is and prevent them finishing what Warden first started.

Our Take

The film starts off with a ferocious power that is unrelenting in its brutal depiction of murder. After awhile though, the film becomes highly underwhelming and even the murder sequences are not able to salvage what is the left of the film. Even though the 3-D technology does make for some highly interesting shots and angles, it really does nothing for the film as a whole. The utilization of the 3-D technology is only evident in certain scenes and has no real purposes in most of the others. The only real notable aspect of the film is its throwback to the 80s horror film genre. While that genre was not anything special to begin with, the way Valentine re-creates its predecessor makes for an exponential amount of laughs.

When it comes down to the film's flaws, there are too many to count. The acting, the screenplay, the direction, and the score are all extremely mediocre or pitiful. The main problem with the score is that it reaches its most intense moments when people are driving in their cars or just walking down the street. Where are the intense cinematic scores when the killer is wreaking havoc through the mines and super markets of the town? Although suspense is one of the most important factors of the film, it is never really utilized. Just like in last year's, The Strangers, the film's suspense is utilized over and over and over again. After awhile, it just makes the film all the more predictable. The acting in the film is perhaps some of the worst to have ever been featured in a horror film. Sure, horror films are usually cheesy in the way their actors portray their dim witted characters, but in this film, the acting is just really horrific. There were moments when I was laughing during some of the film's most intense sequences because the actors and actresses were so unbelievable in the element. Critics and people may state that the direction is something that is revolutionary to the horror genre, but it really is nothing new. With shots behind mirrors that "dazzled" the audience when one of the characters punched it and broke it, most of the shots are boring and have been done before.
